Painting
The Green Council of Australia promotes the use of paints that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) to reduce green house emissions. VOC’s originate from many naturally occurring sources but increasingly the proportion of VOC’s in the atmosphere are from man made synthesised product. VOC’s in paint are in the solvent fumes given off as the paint dries contributing to green house gasses as well as asthma and other breathing related problems.
In modern buildings the emphasis is to reduce energy loss by sealing and making areas air tight to reduce heating and cooling. In so doing they trap VOC’s that can take months to exit painted surfaces. Therefore apart from the environmental aspect, people’s health is a major consideration. Paint is now available contain very low or nil amounts of VOC’s.

Sealing your house from heat loss or gain reduces the need for heating and air-conditioning, making your home more energy efficient and reducing your carbon footprint. This can easily be achieved by using weather seals around windows and doors and filling gaps in areas where insulation is poor.
